Rises in Hay Thefts
24 August 2010

Around the country farmers are reporting high levels of hay theft, brought about by high hay prices following a poor harvest.

Farmers say hay costs have risen from the usual £2.50 per bale to £4.50 or even £6 in some parts of the country thanks to a bad harvest following the cold winter and dry spring. The amount of hay harvested in June is down 20 per cent.

Now police are on the lookout for thieves targeting more farms so they can sell the hay on when prices rise further in the winter. Farmers in Kent, Cambridgeshire, the Thames Valley have reported the theft of hundreds of bales. Straw, that is also in short supply, has been targeted as well.

If you see anyone acting suspiciously in or around hay storage areas, please contact the Police on 0845 6060 247

Yorkshire Water have provided a number you can call free of charge to verify the identity of a doorstep caller claiming to represent them. Simply call 0800 1387878

Remember that all electricity, gas and water companies offer a doorstep password scheme. You create the password and when a representative calls they will give you this unique password to confirm they are legitimate.

If you haven't already done so we recommend you contact each to set up a password. Choose passwords that are unique and that you will remember. Keep them out of sight but where you can easily find it if needed, close the door first.

Continued vigilance and challenge is key to beating doorstep crime. If you aren't sure, don't open the door.

Unsolicited Telephone Calls
22 July 2010

There has been an increase in the number of older people receiving unsolicited telephone calls from a company called SAS Fire & Security or Crime Research UK offering the installation of security systems.

They often claim to be either:

  • from a company fitting security systems linked to the local Police
  • offering 4 houses in the road a free security system
  • from a National Crime Prevention Unit and giving away 4 free alarms in the area
  • from SAS and working in conjunction with the local Police
  • offering monitoring alarm systems with a guaranteed response from the Police

Whilst the alarms are free or a nominal cost of £1, the ongoing maintenance costs are high and there is a cancellation fee.

The company call the local Police service and request an incident / log number to give the impression that they are authorised by the Police to call.

This company is being investigated by Scambusters and North Lanarkshire Trading Standards Services obtained an injunction from Edinburgh County Court under Section 217 of the Enterprise Act 2002.

The injunction bans the company from using approval of any authorised body including the Police, Government or Local Authority, or from describing the alarm as "free" or "gratis", or engaging in aggressive commercial practise.

This injunction is also enforceable in England

If you receive any calls from Crime Research UK or SAS Fire & Security you are requested to report these directly to Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06

It is recommended that you register with the Telephone Preference Service to reduce cold calls.

Bogus Caller Alert....
18 June 2010

In recent days there have been reports of a suspicious male described as between 30 and 40 years of age, with short fair hair, of stocky build, about 5' 9'' or 10'' tall, wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans and white trainers, possibly with a small brown and white dog.

This male has reportedly been visiting people at their homes, claiming to be from various companies and that he needs to inspect equipment within the home.

Police believe the male is a bogus caller and would ask that any cold callers have their identification thoroughly checked before entry is given to your home. If in doubt, do not let them in.

Please report any suspicious incidents to Police on 0845 60 60 24 7.

Vehicle Movements Request
17 June 2010

A Silver Ford Transit van, registration CE54 TXR, is linked to persons currently staying on various illegal  campsites in the Eastfield / Seamer / Cayton area.

On the side of the vehicle is written "Top Cut Landscape Gardens", and the phone number 07765 583676.

It is thought likely that these persons will charge excessively high prices and pressurize customers in relation to cutting down trees, foliage, etc. The cuttings are then dumped rather than being recycled properly.

Residents are advised to be aware of this if they receive any offers or quotations for work.

If this vehicle is seen, please contact North Yorkshire Police immediately on 0845 6060 247 giving direction of travel and (if possible) description of vehicle's occupants.
