Census Scam
31 January 2012

 Alert over Census scam

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has become aware of an email entitled 'Population Census: a message to everyone - act now' being circulated, allegedly in the name of National Statistician, Jil Matheson.

This email demands individuals provide further personal information, supposedly for the Census and threatens fines for non-compliance.

This email is a scam and a hoax. It has no connection whatsoever with the National Statistician, the 2011 Census or the Office for National Statistics.

ONS believes the links in the email could download malicious software onto the user's computer by clicking on the links. This could put the user's personal data, including financial information, at risk.

Anyone receiving this, or similar emails, should delete them at once and not open them or any of links and certainly not provide any information.

For more information about protecting yourself from this type of threat, please see www.getsafeonline.org

If you wish to, please report receipt of any such suspicious emails to www.actionfraud.org.uk

Collection of census data was completed last year and no further requests will be forthcoming from the Office for National Statistics relating to the 2011 Census.

Lost or Stolen from Everton near Bawtry
21 January 2012
A mare has escaped/been stolen from a field in Everton near Bawtry, the mare was last seen on or around the 29th December, she has no name and could be in foal as she runs with a Stallion and other mares in fields that belong to a horse breeder.
The owner is unsure whether she has wandered off or been stolen.

She is described as an all black, dale fresian cross 15hh mare, with a hogged mane and aged 15/16 years. The owner has no pictures and although she is passported she has no microchip. She is not a riding horse and has not been backed.

Due to the horses location, she could be in Nottinghamshire, Humberside, South Yorkshire or the Lincolnshire areas as all borders are close to where the field is where she went missing. I appreciate the information is vague.

Could you please report any sightings or information to 101.

Volunteers needed for ICVS
03 January 2012

North Yorkshire Police Authority (NYPA) is currently seeking to recruit more volunteers to its Independent Custody Visiting Scheme.

Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs) are voluntary members of the local community who are appointed by NYPA to visit police stations unannounced to check and report on the welfare and treatment of people arrested and detained in police custody.  This is a unique voluntary role as ICVs have random and largely unfettered access to detainees.

The Scheme requires representatives from as wide a variety of backgrounds and sections of the community as possible. No experience is necessary as successful applicants will be fully trained and supported in conducting  visits.

ICVs are always made in pairs, at any time during the day and on any day of the week that is convenient to themselves and the ICV they are paired with.  Visits usually last one hour on average but this timescale may vary depending on how busy the custody area is at the time of their visit!

ICVs are normally expected to make on average 1 or 2 visits each month to the police station in the area in which they live, so this is an ideal voluntary scheme if you wish to contribute something back to your local community without committing too much time from your work, studying, social  or family life.  Group meetings are also held four times a year to raise issues and share experiences.  We have panels of ICVs in Harrogate, Northallerton, Scarborough, Skipton and York which cover North Yorkshire and the City of York.

If you are age 18 plus, interested in the ICV Scheme and would like to request an information and application pack, please get in touch.

Either contact the Scheme Administrator Claire Askew on 01765 641839, email info@nypa.gov.uk or visit the NYPA website www.nypa.gov.uk for more information.

New Number for North Yorkshire Police
12 December 2011

The national non-emergency number 101 is coming to North Yorkshire Police on 12 December 2011 and  will replace the         0845 60 60 24 7 number.  While 999 is a well-recognised number used to report emergencies, the 2010 British Crime Survey found that only 54% of the public knew how to contact their local police if they wanted to talk to them about policing, crime or anti-social behaviour.

The introduction of the 101 number will offer the public one easy way to contact their local police force.

The benefits of this new number include:

Calls from landlines and mobile networks cost 15 pence per call, no matter what time of day you call or how long you are on the phone.

101 is available 24 hours a day

When you call 101, you will be able to speak to the force control room via the automated switchboard.  When you call 101, we will act on the information we receive.   Calling 101 will not result in your call receiving a lower priority than if you had called 999 about a non-emergency issue.

For those callers who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, the service can be accessed via textphone on 18001 101
